Hybrid-Powered Muscle Cars? E-mail

PoorBest

Someone asked us about the possibility of swapping in a new GM SUV Hybrid powertrain into an American Musclecar.     We were very intrigued with the idea of making decent power, getting awesome fuel economy, and having a "green" car no matter what the color.   As a research project, we borrowed a new Cadillac Escalade Hybrid SUV to see how the system drove, and to learn about the packaging.     Watch the video to see our conclusions.

popular mechanics magazine has a project car now doing this. It is a new challenger. It will probably weigh well over 5000lbs when done, but it is a way to keep muscle alive in this politically correct, greenie weenie age

Agreed. I don't think we'll see hybrid musclecars anytime soon, especially retro-fit systems. I do agree that Diesels will increase in popularity. Right now, the biggest issue seems to be size, most diesels engines are quite large, even the 3 cylinder ones.

Heck, I'd consider one for my 69 Ranchero, if I could find one that would fit under the hood.

Hybrid Musclecar. That just screams oxymoron.

What about the new 4.5 liter duramax diesel? That supposedly is much more compact than its predecessors and might make for an interesting swap. You probably wouldn\\\'t want to rev the diesel out like you would on the gas hybrid, but the torque numbers look promising.
