Gas and diesel blocks were the same basic casting. Diesels don't build manifold vacuum, so a vacuum pump was needed to run the a/c vacuum stuff. Vacuum was also modulated on the diesel injection pump for the automatic trans vacuum modulator. The vacuum pump went where the gas engine distributor normally went.
The diesel's "lift pump" (which pulled fuel from the tank for the injection pump) went where the normal gas engine's fuel pump went.
